Natural resources
 
      Alaska is the most extensive state of the U.S., famous for its natural resources. On the territory of Alaska there are more than 3 million lakes and 3 thousand rivers with the Yukon River being the third longest in the United States, 100 thousand glaciers (5% of the surface of Alaska), the highest peak of North America - Peak McKinley; about 70 active volcanoes. Every year there erupt 5 thousand earthquakes; a thousand of them reached 3.5 on the Richter scale. The poetic nickname of the area is “the Last Line”, the Last Frontier which is obviously due to its extreme location on the North American continent but also because of its remoteness from the mainland, and the diversity of landscape and climate. It was only on 3 January 1959 that the area received the status of the 49 the U.S. state. Another nickname is “the Country Midnight Sun”, the Land of the Midnight Sun.The word Alaska comes from the Aleut alah’sah ‘or ala’sh’a, whales place, the whale abundance; another interpretation of Alaska - from the Aleut word meaning great land, a continent, the peninsula. The area of the state is 1717854 km ² (of which 236,507 km ² -is surface area) with the administrative center in Juneau, Juneau. The population is 670 thousand people. Alaska is full of natural recourses.
